We are looking for an organized, easy-going, part time handler to join us in California this spring! We will be training for a circuit of 100-mile races (The Triple Crown) and will spend much of our time exploring the winter trails of the Sierras in preparation. Previous mushing experience is not mandatory, but we do a lot of daily free play and non-sled adventuring with our dogs (hiking, bikejoring, paddle boarding, skiing, snowshoeing), so a general love of dogs is required and experience with working breeds is preferred. Outdoor experience and wilderness survival skills are essential.
Handler duties include: general dog care, supervision of free-running play groups, yard maintenance, poo pick up, heavy lifting and athletic activities. The handler is welcome to join us for training runs, help with race preparation (cutting meat, folding booties, preparing dropped bags), to travel and handle at races, and to learn the general ins and outs of running a small adventure kennel. This work is physically demanding and the handler must be okay with lifting 50 lb bags of kibble, and shoveling snow for hours on end during our big Sierra storms. We are looking for someone who genuinely wants to participate in this lifestyle including all of its adventure and all of its hard work.
Handler compensation: Housing is provided in a beautiful spacious 24' yurt bordering the Tahoe National Forest. This 'dry' 'off grid' yurt comes equipped with battery power, wood stove, kitchen, bathroom with a compostable toilet, small storage room, bedroom loft, and a large deck overlooking the seasonal creek. Handler must be comfortable with hauling water, chopping firewood, and shoveling snow to keep the yurt functioning, and excited about living an off-grid lifestyle. The handler has access to laundry and a hot shower up at the main house.

We work with each dog on an individual basis to ensure that their physical and mental health are taken care of, and we aim to have a low stress environment where our dogs have the freedom to play as a pack and to learn how to work as a team. We use positive free shaping techniques to teach our dogs how to problem solve and much of our summer is spent throwing pool parties and free walking through the forest as our dogs learn to navigate the natural world around them.
